  9. Windows NT 4.0 Installation Instructions
  10. ----------------------------------------
  11. The following steps describe how to install your 3Com network NIC in a
  12. computer running Windows NT 4.0. 
  13.  
  14. 1.  Start Windows NT.
  15.  
  16. 2.  In the Control panel, double-click the Network icon.
  17.  
  18. 3.  Click the Adapters tab in the Network Control Panel.
  19.  
  20. Note:  If Networking has not been installed in your system before, 
  21.        when you open the Network control panel Windows NT will ask 
  22.        you if you want to install networking.  Click Yes and refer 
  23.        to the Windows NT Documentation for instructions.
  24.  
  25. 4.  Click Add...
  26.  
  27. 5.  In the Select Network Adapter window, Click Have Disk.
  28.  
  29. 6.  Insert the EtherDisk 2 diskette into drive A: and type:
  30.     A:\ [Enter].
  31.  
  32. 7.  In the Select OEM Option box, select one of the following: 
  33.     
  34.     3Com EtherLink XL NIC (3C900) for the 10 Mbps NIC
  35.     3Com Fast EtherLink XL NIC (3C905) for the 10/100 Mbps NIC
  36.  
  37. 8.  Click the OK button.
  38.  
  39. 9.  Click Close in the Welcome sreen that appears.
  40.  
  41. 10. In the Network window, click Close.
  42.  
  43.     If you are prompted for network information, contact your system     
  44.     administrator for information unique to your network.
  45.  
  46. 11. In the Network Settings Change window, click Yes to restart 
  47.     your computer.

  50. Windows NT 3.51 Installation Instructions
  51. -----------------------------------------
  52. The following steps describe how to install your 3Com network NIC in a
  53. computer running Windows NT 3.51. 
  54.  
  55. 1.  Start Windows NT.
  56.  
  57. 2.  In the Control panel, double-click the Network icon.
  58.  
  59. 3.  In the Network Settings window, select the existing 3Com driver in    
  60.     the Installed adapters group.
  61.  
  62. 4.  Click Remove.
  63.  
  64. 5.  Click Yes in the Network Settings dialog box.
  65.  
  66. 6.  In the Network Settings window, click Add Adapter.
  67.  
  68. 7.  In the Add Network adapter window, press and hold the down arrow until
  69.     <Other> Requires Disk from Manufacturer appears.
  70.  
  71.     NOTE: This requires the 3Com EtherDisk 2 diskette.     
  72.  
  73. 8.  Click Continue.
  74.  
  75. 9.  Insert the EtherDisk 2 diskette into drive A: and type:
  76.     A:\ [Enter].
  77.  
  78. 10. In the Select OEM Option box, select one of the following: 
  79.     
  80.     3Com EtherLink XL NIC (3C900) for the 10 Mbps NIC
  81.     3Com Fast EtherLink XL NIC (3C905) for the 10/100 Mbps NIC

  83. 11. Click the OK button.
  84.  
  85. 12. Click Close in the Welcome sreen that appears.
  86.  
  87. 13. In the Network Settings window, click OK.
  88.  
  89.     If you are prompted for network information, contact your system     
  90.     administrator for information unique to your network.

  92. 14. In the Network Settings Change window, click Restart to restart 
  93.     your computer.

  96. Troubleshooting 
  97. ---------------
  98. If  a message appears, stating that Windows NT networking is not installed, 
  99. either it has not been installed or a problem has occurred in changing the 
  100. network settings.  If you have never installed networking on this system, 
  101. proceed to the next section, "Installing Windows NT Networking for the 
  102. First Time." Otherwise, follow the steps here to reinstall Windows NT 
  103. networking.

  105.     Reinstalling Windows NT Networking
  106.     ----------------------------------
  107.     NOTE:  This procedure requires Windows NT installation media.
  108.  
  109.     WARNING:  You will lose all network settings when you perform this 
  110.               procedure.
  111.     
  112.     1.  Click No when asked if you wish to install networking.
  113.     
  114.     2.  In the Network Settings window, select each installed component 
  115.         one after the other, and click Remove after each one to uninstall 
  116.         all NICs and software listed in the window.
  117.     
  118.     3.  Click OK after you have been removed all items.
  119.     
  120.     4.  When asked if you want to reboot, click Restart Now.
  121.     
  122.     5.  When Windows NT restarts, go to the Network Control Panel.
  123.     
  124.         You will  be asked again if you want to install networking.
  125.     
  126.     6.  In the Network Settings box, click Yes to begin installing 
  127.         Windows NT networking.
  128.     
  129.     7.  Enter the location of the Windows NT installation media.  For 
  130.         example, if your CD-ROM drive is E:, type:
  131.     
  132.         E: \i386
  133.     
  134.     8.  In the NIC Card Detection window, click Do Not Detect.  
  135.     
  136.     9.  In the Add Network NIC window, press and hold the down arrow key 
  137.         until the option <Other> Requires Disk from Manufacturer appears.
  138.     
  139.     10. Insert the EtherDisk 2 diskette into drive A: and type:
  140.     
  141.         A: \ [Enter]
  142.     
  143.     11. In the Select OEM Option box, select one of the following:
  144.     
  145.         3Com EtherLink XL NIC (3C900) for the 10 Mbps NIC
  146.         3Com Fast EtherLink XL NIC (3C905) for the 10/100 Mbps NIC
  147.     
  148.     12. Click the OK button.
  149.     
  150.     13. Select the network protocols you will be using on the network and 
  151.         then click Continue.
  152.     
  153.         Consult your system administrator to find out which protocols to 
  154.         select.
  155.     
  156.     14. Click OK in the Network Settings window to accept the choices you 
  157.         have made.
  158.      
  159.     15. Provide additional information, as required, during the network 
  160.         installation process.
  161.     
  162.         Your computer can auto detect the frame type if needed, but you 
  163.         must obtain IP address and gateway information from your system 
  164.         administrator.
  165.         
  166.     16. Enter the workgroup name or the domain name in the Domain/Workgroup 
  167.         Settings window and click OK.
  168.     
  169.     17. When prompted, press the Restart button on your computer to finish 
  170.         the installation.

  173.     Installing Windows NT Networking for the First Time
  174.     ---------------------------------------------------
  175.     If you have never installed networking on this computer, follow these 
  176.     steps:

  178.     1.  In the Network Settings box, click Yes to begin installing 
  179.         Windows NT networking.
  180.     
  181.     2.  Enter the location of the Windows NT installation disks.

  225. ADVANCED INTALLATION OPTIONS
  226. ----------------------------

  228.     Running Windows NT on a Non-DOS Processor
  229.     -----------------------------------------
  230.  
  231.     If your system cannot run the DOS-based Configuration and Diagnostic 
  232.     program, you may need to set the speed and duplex level of the NIC in 
  233.     the Windows NT registry.  The speed and duplex value of the NIC can be 
  234.     set manualy by using the MEDIA keyword.  To set the MEDIA keyword, add 
  235.     the key MEDIA to the registry in the subkey:    
  236.                     
  237.     \\HKEY_lOCAL_NACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\El90x?\Parameters
  238.  
  239.     NOTE: Multiple subkeys that look like El90x appear right next to 
  240.           each other.  The correct one has a digit in place of the ? 
  241.           in the above expression to represent which NIC it is.  The 
  242.           incorrect one simply reads El90x.

  245.     The value for the MEDIA keyword should be one from the list below.  The 
  246.     default is NotPresent.
